The peaceful Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria was shaken early Monday by a tragic shooting that left two men dead, including the mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau, Franz Hofer. Authorities have since launched a large-scale manhunt to find the suspected shooter, who remains on the run and is considered “extremely dangerous.”
Franz Hofer, the 64-year-old mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau in the Rohrbach district, was killed in what authorities believe was a targeted attack. The initial reports confirmed that Hofer was fatally shot in Altenfelden, a neighboring village. A second body was later discovered in Arnreit, another nearby location, and is believed to be that of a former hunting director and police officer. Police are investigating potential motives linked to the hunting sector, as both victims reportedly had connections to the local hunting community.
Police have identified a 56-year-old man as the suspect in this case. He is believed to be driving a silver VW Caddy and is known to be armed. Authorities have cautioned the public, urging them to avoid contact with the man and to immediately report any relevant information via the emergency police line, 133.
This violent incident has prompted an extensive manhunt involving Austria’s Cobra special operations unit, which is conducting searches throughout Rohrbach. Law enforcement has mobilized search dogs, armored vehicles, and helicopters to assist in the search, while heavily armed units are combing the area. Local police have cordoned off roads, set up checkpoints, and urged residents to comply with all official instructions. Public facilities, including the Rohrbach district administration and municipal offices, have closed temporarily as a precaution.
The police have also posted a wanted notice on social media with the suspect’s photo, asking the public for any information on his whereabouts. The statement accompanying the notice emphasizes the suspect’s dangerous nature and reiterates that no one should attempt to approach him.
According to sources, the suspect may be involved in the local hunting community, as were the victims. Initial findings suggest that the shooting could have stemmed from disputes over hunting rights—an issue that has, in the past, caused contention among local hunters. However, this remains unconfirmed as police continue their investigation.
Following the shocking events, Upper Austria Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) issued a statement condemning the violence, which he described as “unbelievable acts that shock our country.” Stelzer expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, friends, and the community, acknowledging Hofer’s impact as a respected and committed public servant who had held office since 2008. “Franz Hofer was a beloved mayor, known for his dedication and innovative spirit. His untimely death leaves a painful void in our community,” Stelzer said.
Hofer had served Kirchberg ob der Donau for over 16 years, where he was widely regarded for his leadership and community spirit. Beyond his role as mayor, he led the local ÖVP (Austrian People’s Party) group, chaired the district waste association, and served as a hunting leader, a role requiring the coordination of hunting activities, permits, and the representation of hunters’ interests in the community.
The unexpected violence has left the Rohrbach district in a state of shock as residents come to terms with the loss of a trusted community figure and the grim nature of the attack.
